Ask Aunt Anna

This is a Q&A series of blog articles for those couples considering divorce.

You will think I am crazy

Dear Aunt Anna,

My friends think I have it made.  I am older.  My husband has a ton of money.  I have a new car.  A beautiful house.  Whatever I ask for, he gives me.  But I have no emotional relationship with him.  I do not share his bed.  I am living with a stranger.  He is nice I guess, and pays for whatever I want.  I have not had to work in decades.  Yet I am thinking of divorce.  Please tell me what to do.

Older but not wiser

Dear OBNW,

I want a divorce and it has been 40 years now

Dear Aunt Anna,

what procedures do you have to take to get a divorce if you have been separated for 40 years if the spouse is alive and will not sign papers for divorce?

Procrastinator

Dear Procrastinator,

There are ways to complete a divorce with a non willing spouse.  Please find a law firm that has experience in this more complex situation and more forward.  40 years is long enough to be in limbo!

Aunt Anna.

why does divorce cost so much?

Dear Aunt Anna,

I want to get a divorce but attorneys are so expensive.  We do not have much and I just want a simple divorce and to be done with him.  I think he will be fine with paying off the bills and providing for our children.  He makes so much more money than I do.  So why can't I just pay 500 dollars or less and be done with it?

Frustrated in Kirkland

Dear Frustrated,

I am not Lady GaGa

Dear Aunt Anna,

I am not Lady Ga Ga and my husband is not Brad Pitt.  We do not run around naked or do anything out of the ordinary.  But even though I am not special  I still want to be happy and I am not.  Should I get a divorce?

Plain Jane in Belfair

My My Ms Plain Jane!!

First of all-there is only one Lady Ga Ga and more power to her.

yeah, happy holidays

Aunt Anna I do not know what to do.  It is another awful holiday season  yet it seems like now is not the time to get a divorce.  My wife will go through the roof and she already upsets the kids with the stress of the holidays.  When is a good time to let her know I can not stay married to her anymore?

Tom from Lynnwood

Dear Tom,

I signed a Preup-will I get nothing in the Divorce?

Oh Aunt Anna.  I was so in love and so young.  I signed this agreement without knowing what it meant.  I just thought I was proving that I loved him, not his money.  Now after a loveless marriage and wanting to be free, He is telling me I have nothing.  I signed all my rights away.  That there is NO community property.

Aunt Anna, I need the money to start my life again.  I do not want HIS money.  I want half of OUR money.  I worked 12 years to build his business.   Please tell me I have a chance.

Sara

At Thanksgiving time

Dear Aunt Anna:

My spouse is a creep and I no longer want to be with him.  But we have two children under the age of ten, and now we are in the holiday season.  Please give me some advice as I think I am going CRAZY here.

Susan from Kirkland

Dear Susan,

I want a divorce but have no money

Dear Aunt Anna,  My wife is abusive.  I have been hit and yelled at and want out, but have no money.  I have been unemployed for over a year and do not think I can survive without her income.  We have a nice house and I stay busy taking care of it while she works.  I do not know what to do.

Frank in Bremerton

Dear Frank.  You have a number of issues here.  Please get help for the domestic violence.  It is a crime and is no longer tolerated.

all I do is work

Dear Aunt Anna:

I have worked my whole life and want more.  I have a wife and two kids, a nice house and a huge mortgage.  We never seem to get ahead financially and it costs more for my wife to work than what she is able to make.  I am getting older and wonder if this is all there is to life.  I have been thinking more and more of getting a divorce and starting over.  What do you think?

Dan from Silverdale

Dear Dan,

Is it worth it?

Dear Aunt Anna,

I have been married 34 years and have no love left for my husband.  He is a nice enough man, I guess, but we have lived like brother and sister for so long now, and I have nothing to say to him.  Since I am in my mid fifties now does it make sense to get divorced with all the change or just wait to die?

Depressed,

Sarah
